What Is a Mixtape Life? - How to Curate Moments That Make You Feel Wildly Alive
Tired of boring to-do lists and the endless grind? What if life was more like a mixtape — a carefully curated collection of moments that light you up instead of chores that weigh you down? Welcome to the Mixtape Life: your new way to live boldly, joyfully, and unapologetically you. Ready to press play?
What is a Mixtape Life?
So, what is a Mixtape Life?
Think of it like your personal playlist—but way more meaningful than the songs you shuffle on your phone. It’s a collection of moments you want to actually live, not just skip past. For us, it started with fifty moments—because hey, turning 50 feels like a good excuse to dream big. Each moment is like a spark waiting to light up our days.
Sometimes it’s a place — like Cornwall’s wild beaches or a quiet mountaintop in Peru. Sometimes it’s a moment — like Craig flying a drone above us while I mix music at golden hour, both of us winging it but loving every second. Here’s our list.
Other times, it’s harder to put into words — like remembering my mum dancing barefoot in the kitchen, proving joy doesn’t need a reason.
This Mixtape Life isn’t about perfection. It’s not even about ticking boxes. It’s about movement. Curiosity. That little bit of magic in everyday life.
At first, we called it a bucket list — because that’s what people get.
“Ah, yes,” they say, nodding like they’ve heard it all before, “things to do before you die.”
Sure, that too. But honestly? We watched my Mum and Dad plan their bucket list and dream of a retirement trip—only for that plan to vanish when Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It taught us that life isn’t guaranteed. So why wait to enjoy it? Why not start now—not “someday,” not “after retirement”?
Watcing sunrises and sunsets are definitely our thing!
So to be clear, we’re not doing this because we’re afraid of dying. We’re doing it because we finally remembered that we want to know what it feels like to be wildly, inconveniently alive. So yeah — call it a bucket list if you want. But for us, it’s a soul list. A love letter. To life. To each other. To the parts of ourselves we nearly forgot in the daily grind of adulthood, parental responsibilities, and overcooked broccoli.
Yes, we’re a bit crazy, but it keeps life interesting!
This project isn’t really about escape. It’s about expansion. It’s about waking up one day and asking: What if life could be a mixtape — instead of just a schedule? What if we stopped trying to get through the week, and started curating it like a set? What if adventure isn’t some expensive, distant thing — but something we give ourselves permission to feel right here, in the awkward middle bit?
Nothing beats a walk before the world wakes up
That’s where Mixtapes Life was born. Not out of mastery. Out of the mayhem that has been our lives for the last 4.5 years. Out of longing for freedom. Out of two humans who decided to stop waiting to be ready, and start making a little magic out of the mess.
🎧 How You Can Live a Mixtape Life
Let’s be clear — this isn’t all about DJing or drone-flying, that’s just our random thing together. Living a Mixtape Life isn’t about selling your house and living out of a suitcase or learning to do handstands on a paddleboard at sunrise — unless that’s what lights you up. (In which case: please speak out to Craig he loves to do all of that) Living a Mixtape Life is about curating your aliveness.
It’s about weaving together those rare, golden hour-feeling moments — the ones that make you feel more you than usual — and deciding they get to be the soundtrack of your life. Not just the background music.
It’s about saying:
“What if I didn’t wait until retirement to see the Northern Lights?”
“What if I danced on this hilltop because it brings me joy, even if no one else is?”
“What if I stopped putting off the joy part until I was thinner / richer / less busy / more certain?”
You don’t need to sell your house or start a travel blog. You don’t need a drone. You don’t even need a passport. What you need is a moment of honesty. A few quiet minutes. A blank page. And this question:
If life was a mixtape… what would be my next track?
Where do you want to go to see the sunset?
Not the impressive one. Not the one your parents or Instagram would approve of. The real one. The juicy one. The weird, goosebump one.
It might be a road trip. A sea swim. A solo lunch at your favourite café where you finally write the first page of that novel. It might be signing up for a dance class. Or quitting the dance class and dancing in your living room instead. It might be saying yes to something ridiculous. Or no to something you’ve outgrown.
The point isn’t what you do.
The point is that you do it on purpose. With feeling.
Like every good mixtape — it’s the transitions that matter. You don’t need to be brave all the time. Just bold enough to press play.
🎶 How to Start Your Mixtape Life
Okay, so you’re in. You’re not totally sure what this is, but you feel something stirring — a tingle in your gut, like life might be offering you a backstage pass. Welcome. You're officially one of us now:
The Track Seekers. The Moments Chasers.
The beautifully confused humans who suspect there's more to life than back-to-back meetings, weekend trips to B&Q, and whatever your algorithm thinks you want. But let’s be real — starting your Mixtape Life isn’t about quitting your job tomorrow and running off to Bali in a caftan (unless that is your next track, in which case… godspeed).
It starts right here. Wherever you are. With this one question:
What makes you feel more alive than usual?
Not what you’re good at. Not what people praise you for. Not what’s on trend, or what your cousin is doing in Portugal. But that weird, glowing, grinning thing that wakes you up from the inside. You know the one. The one you might want anyone else to know.
Got it?
Cool. Write that down. That’s Track One.
Now, here’s how we started. Spoiler: it was not glamorous. We sat on the sofa — pyjamas, snacks, spreadsheets — and wrote a list of 50 things we wanted to do before we die. But quickly the bucket list stopped being about death. It became a list of things we wanted to feel while we’re still alive.
Some were big, bold, outrageous — like filming 12 DJ sets around the world while Craig flies a drone like some sun-kissed techno eagle. Some were tiny and tender — like watching the stars in silence, or planning a surprise day out for reach other.
The point isn’t achieving the list. The point is tuning into the signal — the one that whispers this would light me up before your ego has time to talk you out of it.
What’s track one on your mixtape?
If you're ready to start your own Mixtape Life, here's the process:
Make a list that turns you on - not anybody else.
Not one that makes sense. Not one that’s #aesthetic. Just one that feels like you.Start with one thing.
Just one. Do it badly, imperfectly, awkwardly. Book the trip. Wear the glitter. Dance at the traffic lights. Whatever floats your boat.Let it change you.
Because it will. That’s the wild bit. You won’t just be ticking things off — you’ll be evolving. Reinventing. Coming home to the version of yourself that remembers how to feel joy.Capture it.
You don’t need a drone (but Craig will probably try to convince you otherwise). Just find some way to remember it: a photo, a journal entry, a song you play every time you do something brave.Keep going.
Let the next track reveal itself. You don’t need to know the full album yet. Just the next beat.
A Mixtape Life doesn’t need a launch date. It just needs a pulse. And a “yes” from that part of you that still believes in magic. So — what would be Track One for you?
